Video

Digital film was a natural progression for me, once I discovered the video capabilities of modern DSLR cameras. Although my trusty 5DMKII (the originator of the DSLR video boom) has been completely outclassed by newer competitors from the likes of Sony, Panasonic and Samsung, I haven't yet upgraded. As I see it, none of these cameras is the complete package.

When a full frame 4K camera, with high dynamic range, high frame rate capability and robust video codec appears (and I don't have to re-mortgage to afford it), I'll go for it. The technology is moving quickly. I don't believe I'll have to wait too long.

Update

The time has come! I've just received a Sony A7III. It's got all of the specs I spoke abaout above (with perhaps, the exception of the video codecs). Still, it has enough to warrant the upgrade. Scroll to the bottom of the page for some video tests and take a look on the Photography page for some still examples and more info.

Morning ambush

My son, Luke blew a good chunk of his birthday money on some Nerf guns and was eager to try them out. On me.

My first (admittedly rough) test on the Sony A7III. The bulk of this was filmed at 25fps in 4K then downsized to 1080p. The slow motion segments were filmed at 100fps in 1080p and interpreted to 25fps. There is some serious burnout in the highlights — the screen, while effective indoors is very hard to view in strong sunlight. I might need to invest in a monitor to get around this.

I have since discovered the Log and Cine profiles so the next video I make will hopefully be an improvement.
